Memorial Day
So I am a little late with this, but my spam filter at work ate these photos originally. Sorry about that!
I was able to talk to my husband a little earlier in the week (it was our first anniversary on Monday) and I asked him if the Marines had any sort of Memorial Day ceremony. He said they did at the base in Kandahar province, though he wasn’t there that day.
Certainly Memorial Day hits a little closer to home for all of us when we have a loved one serving in the military. My grandfather was a Marine in WWII, and his best friend was killed at Tarawa. Every year, he makes this little sign in memory of “Goldie” and posts it by the Blue Star Highway sign near his house in South Carolina. Nowadays, Marines tend to wear those silver bracelets in honor of the friends they have lost, but in whatever manner they choose, I know that there are many Marines who will still be remembering 1st Sgt. Mercardante, Cpl. Wilks and Cpl. Cooper long after the MEU has returned home.
These photos of the ceremony at the boardwalk were all provided by public affairs, and all the Marines I recognize are from the command element.
